We turn to body wash as a trusted way to start your day squeaky-clean, but you might feel anything but when you read the label of conventional body washes. Many soaps have toxic chemicals in their ingredient lists, like parabens, phthalates, and sulfates. Research from the CDC shows that much of what we put on our skin is absorbed into the bloodstream, meaning those chemicals might be lurking long after you step out of the shower.

Shopping for non-toxic and organic body wash is a way to avoid these chemical additives and feel confident that your body wash is free of harmful chemicals and toxins. Here are our top picks for the best organic body wash for all needs.

Best Overall Organic Body Wash

Dr Bronner’s 4-in-1 Lemongrass Lime Sugar Soap

Dr Bronner’s is a cult-favorite all natural and all organic soap brand. Their products are truly great for all use cases (they won our best pick for all organic soap, period).

We love their 4-in-1 Lemongrass Lime Sugar Soap for an organic body wash specifically (but it works great for hands, shampoo, and even pets, too). The formula is made with fair trade and organic sugar derived from organic white grape juice. It’s also blended with organic coconut and hemp oils for a creamy, moisturizing lather. The formula is certified vegan, non-GMO, and nearly 50% of the ingredients are Fair Trade certified via Fair for Life.

It’s also a 100% biodegradable soap, so you can use it an outdoor shower and not worry about leaving traces of harmful chemicals. The bottle is made of 100% post-consumer recycled material, too.

We also love that Dr Bronner’s has one of the most impressive environmental, social, and sustainable initiatives in the industry. They’re a certified B corporation (and get one of the highest scores of all certified B corporations), they have incredibly progressive labor and employment practices, and are investing in regenerative organic agriculture practices to help combat climate change.

What users love

  • It produces a mild lather that doesn’t strip skin of oil
  • The scent is mildly sweet
  • A little goes a long way (some customers even dilute it)

What users don’t love

  • Some customers have had issues with the soap leaking in the shipping process.

Coconut and Lemon 3in1 Soap

  • Made with organic calendula, aloe vera, and chamomile
  • EWG certified, non-GMO, vegan, cruelty free, and certified B Corp

Everyone offers an all-purpose, affordable body wash that will work for all. And at about $10.99 for a 32 ounce bottle, it’s a bit easier to stock up on than other organic body washes.

The coconut and lemon variety is their best reviewed product, made with organic calendula, aloe vera, and chamomile. It also comes with white tea extracts, vitamin E, and vitamin B5 for their antioxidant qualities.

The coconut and lemon makes for a bright, citrusy scent that’s not too sweet. It gets over 4,500 5-star reviews on Amazon, with customers loving the fact it creates a nice lather despite being a relatively thin formula (no goopy gels!).

We love that Everyone’s 3in1 soap is a non-toxic body wash that’s certified by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). It’s also a non-GMO, cruelty-free, and vegan brand. They’re a certified B corp company, too, meaning they’re meeting the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability. The fragrance-free option is made with organic aloe, green tea and jojoba oil, among other certified organic ingredients. It contains no artificial fragrances or dyes, and is vegan and cruelty free. Customers love that it’s super gentle but does a great job at removing unwanted body odor.

True Botanicals

Organic Body Wash

  • No harsh cleansers or synthetic fragrances

Bathing Culture

Mind and Body Organic Body Wash

  • Moisturizing and refreshing formula
  • Carbon neutral product made in 100% recycled plastic bottle

Bathing Culture’s Mind and Body organic body wash has a lot of great attributes, but especially stands out for the many 5-star reviews mentioning how much they love the scent.

The scent is called Cathedral Grove, and it’s meant to “transport you to the Redwood canopies of Northern California.” Customers were surprised by how much they love the scent, with some going as far to say that it’s “intoxicating.”

The Bathing Culture organic body wash is certified organic (by Oregon Tilth), and made with ingredients like aloe, shea, and guar. Many reviews also mentioned that the formula is a good mix between moisturizing (thanks to the aloe and shea), and refreshing.

We also love that this organic body wash is biodegradable, cruelty-free and vegan, and comes in a 100% recycled bottle (they use California’s curb-side blue bin recycling program to source their materials). It’s also a carbon neutral product.

Be Green

Fragrance Free Bath & Shower Gel

  • Moisturizing but still leaves you feeling clean
  • EWG verified

On the flipside, if you’re looking for an unscented organic body wash (maybe you don’t want to be intoxicated in the shower!), Be Green Fragrance Free Bath & Shower Gel is a good option.

Its key ingredients are organic coconut oil, organic olive oil, and vegetable glycerin (acts as rehydrator for your skin), among other organic ingredients. Customers love that it’s moisturizing, but leaves you feeling really clean. Many customers note that it also works better with a loofah to make the lather extra sudsy.

We love that this organic, non-toxic body wash is Environmental Working Group (EWG) verified, meaning it meets the strictest standards for human health. It’s also certified Cruelty Free by PETA. As a company, Be Green is certified by Green America (meaning they meet rigorous standards for environmental and social business practices).

Best for Sensitive Skin

Sensitive Skin

Gentle Genius Body Wash

  • Independently patch tested product
  • Woman-owned brand
  • Vegan and cruelty free

Pai’s Gentle Genius natural body wash is an independently patch tested product that works well for sensitive skin. It’s even a gentle organic body wash option for those with eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis prone skin.

It’s a sulfate-free blend made with camellia oil and magnolia berry, meant to condition, moisturize, and soothe skin. It does get sudsy even though it’s sulfate-free, thanks to the all-natural konjac sponge it comes with (made with 100% vegetable fibers). All in, this product is 99.7% natural, and contains many certified organic ingredients (certified by the Soil Association).

Customers love that the formula is super gentle, and the combination of the body wash and konjac sponge work really well to exfoliate the most sensitive skin.

We love that Pai is a woman-owned brand that’s certified vegan and cruelty free. They also hold a Cosmos Natural certification (via the Soil Association), which means they’ve done no animal testing, a minimum of 98% of their products are naturally derived, it contains no harmful chemicals (like parabens or sulfates), and more.

Best for All Skin Types

All Skin Types

Natural Body Wash

  • Made with coconut oil based cleansers

Puracy’s Natural Body Wash is a product that will work great for any skin type on any body (it’s even marketed as being great for babies and dogs).

It’s a sulfate-free formula that’s 99.3% natural. It’s made with coconut oil based cleansers, alongside Himalayan pink sea salt that gently exfoliates and hydrates your skin. All in, it’s a great all-purpose natural body wash that you can trust will be effective enough for when you really need to get clean but gentle enough to not strip your skin.

We love that Puracy is a small, family owned brand that’s committed to supporting their community in Austin (all product designs come from local artists), and instituting more sustainable business practices. You can buy a large refillable pouch of body wash to refill your original bottle when it runs out, reducing your plastic, water, and energy use.

Puracy’s natural body wash gets nearly 10,000 5-star reviews on Amazon. Many customers say that they’ve had no issues using this product on sensitive skin, and the formula is cleansing without drying. Customers also like the scents (Citrus and Sea Salt, Bergamot and Sandalwood, and Coconut and Vanilla), but especially love the Bergamot and Sandalwood variety.

Best Organic Body Wash for Acne

Best for Acne

African Black Soap All-in-One

  • Made with sustainably harvest shea butter
  • Provides gentle cleansing while balancing the skin

Another great option for cleansing soap is African black soap, which has been cooked to the point of almost becoming charcoal. The properties of African black soap are known to be great non-chemical treatments for acne, and provide a gentle cleansing that balances the skin’s oils.

There are lots of great African black soaps on the market, but Alaffia’s African Black Soap All-in-One is particularly well-reviewed and effective. The shea butter and sustainably harvested palm oil are sourced from small farms in the Maritime region of Togo.

Alaffia is For Life and Fair for Life (Fair Trade) certified operation by ECOCERT, an international organization that ensures brands have corporate social responsibility commitments and fair trade manufacturing practices. Alaffia is also a certified Minority Business Enterprise.

This cleansing natural body wash gets over 4,500 5-star reviews on Amazon. Customers love that it’s gentle but effective in fighting acne. It works particularly well for people with sensitive skin but still need to control breakouts.

Best Organic Body Wash Bar

Best Bar

Ursa Major

Morning Mojo Bar

  • Energizing soap blended with eucalyptus, peppermint, and rosemary
  • No parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, or synthetic fragrance

If you prefer to have your body wash be in bar foam (less packaging, why not?), the Ursa Major Morning Mojo Bar Soap is a good choice.

This organic body wash is more of an energizing soap (hence the emphasis on morning). It’s made with a blend of eucalyptus, peppermint, and rosemary, and gives off a bright and refreshing scent. It’s made with organic ingredients and has no parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrance, and more. It does have palm oil, but it’s RSPO certified to be sustainable.

Ursa Major’s body wash bar is also well-loved by customers. Customers love that it wakes you up and makes you feel super clean, but it’s moisturizing enough so it doesn’t strip or dry out your skin.

Ursa Major is also a great company to support. They’re committed to making their business practices as sustainable as possible—like using renewable energy in the manufacturing process (producing almost all of their cartons at a carbon neutral facility), maxing out their post consumer recycled materials in every product, and sourcing as many ingredients as possible from the United States to lower their carbon footprint.

Our Research Process

Our search for the best organic body wash started at the brand level.

We first looked for organic body wash companies that used certified organic ingredients—that’s the gold standard. It’s great to filter your search for brands that use certified organic ingredients, but not all newer or smaller brands can! There are some great organic body washes on this list that don’t use fully certified organic ingredients.

We also looked for the best natural body wash brands that were using high quality ingredients without any harsh chemical additives. In fact, all of the products on our list avoid some of the toxins you might want to avoid when shopping for body care products, like parabens, phthalates, sulfates, or triclosan. All are known to be harmful to human health, and you probably don’t want to be rubbing a product full of them on your body every morning!

We gave extra considerations to brands that have gone out of their way to achieve higher standards for non-toxicity, by earning a certification from Made Safe or the Environmental Working Group. We also gave bonus points to certified B Corps and brands investing in other sustainable business practices—like using post consumer recycled content or renewable energy in their manufacturing process.

In the process, we considered the following organic and natural body wash brands:

  1. Dr Bronners
  2. Avalon Organics
