We care a great deal about the ingredients we put in our meals, so why wouldn’t we feel the same about our dogs? After all, a dog’s lifespan depends heavily on the quality of their diet.

But picking high quality dog food can be challenging, especially when there’s no real regulation in the industry on the standards “natural” dog foods must meet, meaning not all natural and organic dog foods are created equal.

If you take the right amount of care in searching for natural dog food, you can find natural and organic dog food brands that take a lot of care in sourcing the highest-quality ingredients. We’ve done that work for you and picked out the best natural and organic dog food on the market.

Best Organic Dog Food: Dry Options

Dry dog food is the most popular dog food product in the industry, largely because of how easy it is to use it and store it. It’s also the most affordable option on the market, depending on the quality of the product you’re getting. Focusing on high quality, organic dry dog food is important because dry dog foods tend to be more processed. You want to make sure what ingredients are going into the formula.

Here are the best natural organic dry dog food brands on the market that use the highest quality ingredients.

Best Overall

BEST OVERALL

Tender & True Organic Chicken & Liver Recipe

Tender & True creates certified organic dry dog food with meat as their first ingredient in all of their products.

Their best-reviewed line, the Organic Chicken and Liver Recipe, uses natural meats, vegetables, vitamins, and minerals, with no grains, artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, or any controversial ingredients. The product uses organic chicken and chicken meal (alongside other natural protein sources, like organic dried peas and chickpeas) to produce an organic dog food with a high percentage of protein (about 30%) as compared to conventional dog food and other natural dog foods available.

It’s also important to note that the Tender & True Chicken & Liver Organic Recipe is made to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages (excluding the growth of large dogs that are 70 lbs or more as an adult).

We also love that Tender & True is not only a certified organic grain-free dog food brand, but is Animal Welfare Certified. The meat found in each product is guaranteed to be humanely raised by the Global Animal Partnership. Also, their products with fish as the main protein source are certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, and are caught by certified sustainable fisheries.

Tender & True organic dog food gets great reviews on both Amazon and Chewy, and it’s a slightly more affordable option ($60 for a 20 lb bag) than other natural dog food brands out there.

what users love

  • Good for dogs with skin sensitivities and allergies
  • Good for regulating bowel movements

what users don’t love

  • Not a good option for dogs much larger than 70 lbs
  • Expensive compared to conventional dog food

Blue Buffalo Wilderness

Salmon Recipe Grain-Free Dry Dog Food

DETAILS

  • Free of grains, artificial preservatives or flavors, soy, wheat, or corn

Blue Buffalo Wilderness is one of the best natural dog foods on the market. Their chicken and salmon recipes are the most popular and get thousands of 4.5+ star reviews.

The Salmon recipe is mixed with salmon, fruits, and vegetables and comes without grains (though they have all natural dog food with grains), artificial preservatives or flavors, soy, wheat, or corn. The ingredients are high quality and all natural, though their products do come with a long ingredient list. Two ingredients to call out are alfalfa meal (a good source of fiber though more likely to be found in horse feed), and dried yeast, which some claim to cause bloat (though that hasn’t been scientifically proven).

The Salmon Recipe has 36% crude protein, and is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO for all dogs.

All things considered, Blue Buffalo Wilderness comes in as one of the best natural dog foods for its ingredient quality and amazing reviews. It’s also a slightly cheaper natural dog food brands, with their largest bag (24 lbs) priced at $56.

Wellness Complete

Health Adult Deboned Chicken & Oatmeal Recipe Dry Dog Food

DETAILS

  • Made with deboned chicken, chicken meal, brown rice, and barley

Wellness is another popular natural dog food brand that has great options for any type of dog food, not just dry kibble. It isn’t an organic dog food brand, but they do use all natural ingredients.

The Chicken & Oatmeal recipe is the most popular, and deboned chicken, chicken meal, brown rice, and barley are the most notable ingredients. It does come with other healthy ingredients farther down the list like flaxseed (a good source of fiber and protein) and chicory root (a good source of fiber and prebiotic). Two controversial ingredients to call out are tomato pomace (a byproduct of processing tomatoes, and thought of as a cheap dog-food filler) and garlic (which has health benefits but has been linked to Heinz body anemia in dogs). Both are low-trace ingredients in this natural dog food so it’s unlikely they pose much risk.

The crude protein percentage comes in a bit lower than some other natural dog food brands, at 24%. The recipe is also developed to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all dogs.

All in, Wellness is a healthy, relatively affordable ($56 for a 30 lb bag), well-reviewed brand you can feel good about buying. We also love that Wellness has created the Wellness Foundation, which partners with animal rescue organizations, the Sustainable Pet Coalition, and Terracycle.

Another brand-new Canidae product worth calling out is their Sustain line, which is a product of the brand’s commitment to sustainability. They use sustainably sourced fish proteins, regeneratively farmed vegetable and grain products (in the U.S.) and post consumer recycled material for 40% of their packaging. This is a new product with almost no reviews, but we’re looking forward to seeing how pet owners like it.

Best Organic Dog Food: Wet & Canned Options

Some pet owners choose to feed their dogs organic wet dog food for the health benefits—it typically has lower carbs. Wet or organic canned dog food also might be more appetizing to your dog.

If you’re looking for a natural or organic wet dog food brand to try out, here are some of our favorites.

Best Overall

The Chicken and Brown Rice recipe is particularly well-reviewed. It comes with organic chicken, brown ice, chicken liver, and carrots. This product does have a particularly high fat-to-protein ratio, so it won’t be the best fit for all dogs. But, we love how confident you can feel in the ingredients in this organic dog food brand.

The Honest Kitchen Whole Grain Chicken Recipe Dehydrated Dog Food

The Honest Kitchen is a great organic dog food brand offering raw food without the hassle of it actually being raw. This product is 100% human grade (meaning you can feed it safely to humans), and contains dehydrated chicken with a short ingredient list of whole, natural vegetables, fruits, and minerals. This isn’t technically a certified organic dog food, but it does contain some certified organic ingredients. The product has a crude protein percentage of about 25%, and works well for all dog life stages besides less active or older dogs.

We love this organic dog food for its commitment to quality ingredients, but it makes our list for the price. A 10 pound bag of dehydrated dog food costs $64.99, and is rehydrated to produce 40 pounds of dog food. As far as high quality, natural dog food goes, this is a really good price.

We also love that The Honest Kitchen makes their sustainability efforts transparent with a social and environmental impact report. While they still have more work to do investing in sustainable practices (and they admit that), they’re already doing a lot—like producing 46% of their product in solar-powered factories, purchasing from certified organic and Marine Stewardship Council certified producers, and using recyclable materials in their packaging.

what users love

  • The price is very reasonable for a high quality freeze-dried dog food.
  • Customers report improved digestion in their dog.

what userse don’t love

  • The consistency can be messy to handle.

Our Research Process

We started the hunt to find the best organic dog food for all varieties by first learning more about the industry and what common ingredients should be avoided.

With very little regulation on what “natural” means in the industry (and a low-bar for what qualifies as “natural”) it’s hard to know if you’re buying a product with high quality ingredients that won’t harm your dog’s health.

When you’re shopping for organic, natural dog food, you’re looking to avoid the following ingredients:

  • Chemical preservatives like BHT, BHA, or Ethoxyquin
  • Artificial flavor or coloring
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Other flavor enhancements like rendered fat
  • “Feed-grade” ingredients like “meat meal” or “meat by-product” (look for human-grade food instead)
  • Corn, soy, and wheat products

Knowing that we need to find natural and organic dog food that contains no trace of the above ingredients, we then turned to the all natural and organic dog food brands on the market.

There are only a few certified organic dog food brands that are popular with dog owners (Tender & True, Organix, Primal, and Newman’s Own are some of the great organic options listed above). If you want to feel 100% confident that no harmful ingredients are going into your dog food, going with a certified organic brand is your best bet. That’s because all organic dog food brands must comply with more government standards, and that eliminates the synthetic pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, hormones or antibiotics you might find in conventional dog food. That’s not to say that all-natural dog food products aren’t great, but you’ll have to do extra due diligence to feel confident you’re getting dog food with healthy, non-toxic, and non-synthetic ingredients.

Here are the brands we considered in our research process.

  1. The Honest Kitchen
  2. Kirkland Organic Dog Food
