We use soap as a trusted way to clean our homes, hands, and bodies, but a lot of conventional soaps might be doing more harm than good. A lot of the ingredients found in conventional soaps are known toxins, like phthalates, parabens, and sulfates. Our skin is the largest and most permeable organ on our bodies, and the toxins we rub on our bodies are absorbed into our bloodstream.
Shopping for non-toxic and organic soap is a great way to know that your soap products are free of harmful chemicals and toxins. With so many organic soap brands on the market, though, it can be hard to know what the absolute best organic soap products are. We did the search for you and found these 11 top brands.
Best Overall Organic Soap
Dr. Bronner’s Hemp Peppermint Pure Castile Soap
Dr. Bronner’s is a well-loved certified organic soap brand that offers the best product you can buy if you want an organic, non-toxic soap that will work in any scenario. In fact, it would be a winner in just about any organic soap category we review below.
The Hemp Peppermint Pure Castile Soap is a concentrated organic soap. It comes in a variety of sizes, but the 32 ounce bottle gives you a lot of soap that you dilute further to use. We love that you get a lot of product in this soap, so you can spend and consume less. It also works for any use—hand soap, body wash, household cleaner, and more.
It’s made with certified organic and certified fair trade ingredients, like organic coconut oil, organic olive oil, and organic hemp oil. It’s peppermint scent leaves a refreshing, clean feeling. It’s also a 100% biodegradable soap, so you can use it outside and not worry about leaving traces of harmful chemicals. The bottle is made of 100% post-consumer recycled material, too.

- Great for your skin but works well for any soap application.
- Really long lasting.
What Users Don’t Love
- The peppermint scent can be too strong for some users.
- There’s no inner seal to the bottle, so rough deliveries could cause the bottle to leak.

The Grove Collaborative organic bar soap is another great organic soap product that’s well-reviewed and really affordable ($4.95 for one bar).
The Lavender and Rosemary bar gets almost 2,000 5-star reviews. It has no sulfates, parabens, phthalates, silicones, synthetic fragrance, artificial colors, and dyes, and we love that it comes in a plastic-free recycled paper box with a small amount of wood that’s Forest Stewardship Council certified.
We also love that this handmade organic soap is made in the USA. Grove Co. is a certified B corp and is an EWG verified brand.

Our Research Process
We started our research on the best organic soap products by looking for brands that work with certified organic ingredients. There are lots of soap products out there that are
all-natural, plant-based, and non-toxic, but don’t contain organic ingredients. We kept our search filtered to only organic products, with the exception of one product (Attitude’s non-toxic handsoap), that’s well-certified and trusted to be non-toxic and safe.
We considered products from all of the following brands:
- O Naturals
- Dr. Bronner’s
- Babo Botanicals
- Shea Moisture
- United by Blue
- Annmarie Skin Care
- Soap for Goodness Sake
- True Botanicals
- Makes 3 Organics
- Alder New York
- Sierra Bravo
- Honey Sweet Acres Soap
- Beekman 1802
- Codex Beauty
- Grove Collaborative
- Seven Minerals
- Sally B’s Skin Yummies
- Kiss My Face
- Be Green Bath and Body
- Ursa Major
- Burt’s Bees
- Bathing Culture
- Plant apothecary
- The Yellow Bird
When choosing our best organic soap list, we considered a lot of factors.
With the exception of our top pick, Dr. Bronner’s, not all soap products work for every use case. We wanted to find organic soap that was best-in-class for the variety of categories you might be shopping for when looking for soap. We made sure to find the best option for each.
When a brand checked the box for being organic, we looked at other attributes that might set them apart from the rest of the group. We consulted a couple of our most trusted databases—like Made Safe and the Environment Working Group (EWG)—to not only find products from the start, but also ensure that all the products on our list were safe and free of ingredients that may cause human or environmental harm.
From there, we also considered certifications that signaled to us that the organic soap brands were paying particularly close attention to their ingredients or environmental and social impact—like cruelty free, non-GMO, fairtrade, ECOLOGO, and more. While this list focused on organic soaps, we have found the best cruelty free and vegan soap too.
We also always consider eco-friendly or sustainability actions and commitments that set brands apart from one another. For instance, many of our brands on this list are certified B corps, or put a particularly strong emphasis on protecting and upholding workers’ rights.
Finally, after considering how organic and safe each product is, we make our selections based on user reviews. We strongly believe that buying sustainable, eco-friendly products doesn’t have to be a sacrifice. We made sure all of the organic soap products above have been either tested by our staff personally, or have a critical mass of positive user reviews.
